Chapter Information
Montana pediatricians began formal meetings in 1949 with seven physicians in attendance. Dr. D.L. Gillespie, from Butte, MT was the first President. Montana chapter, American Academy of Pediatrics incorporated in 1986.
From the beginning the purpose was to provide a forum to promote the health and well-being of Montana children and families and to enhance the professional and personal growth of its members.
We currently have approximately 80 members, from all over Montana. Although we are considered a "small" chapter, we think we have a BIG voice!
Recent Chapter Highlights
Our chapter has achieved legislative changes for Montana 's children and families by membership in the Montana Council for Maternal and Child Health.
Individual pediatricians have advocated for changes in public policy to address child health issues through contact with legislators.
During the last legislative session, we participated in a coalition of health care professionals to educate Montana citizens about tobacco health issues, including a substantial increase in the tobacco tax with income earmarked for health care issues and tobacco education programs.
Montana AAP has pediatrician members on several state advisory boards including Newborn Screening, Universal Hearing Screening, Children's Special Health Services, Medicaid and Graduated Driver's License.
FIT KIDS = HAPPY KIDS
The Montana Chapter developed a poster and a handout for distribution to families that emphasized healthy eating habits and appropriate family activities. 7000 posters/handouts were distributed to physician offices, schools, WIC, Headstart and other interested allies in child health.
