Course Objectives:

Following this Conference, the participants should be able to:

  • Describe to families and children achievable exercise and diet goals for a pediatric patient.
  • Separate safe from unsafe nutrition practices for sports in children.
  • Discuss the diagnosis and treatment of bipolar disorder in children.
  • Explain and understand pharmacologic interventions for common disorders in pediatric psychiatry.
  • Discuss prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and management of juvenile idiopathic arthritis.
  • Discuss the national, federal and state medical home initiatives around medical home.
  • Identify risk factors in a pediatric patient’s history and physical examination that may place them at risk for metabolic syndrome and other complications of obesity.
  • Recognize, treat and prevent Vitamin D deficiency in children.
  • Distinguish between normal variant short stature and those with treatable etiologies in children.
  • Describe the calming reflex in children and understand how to talk to parents about treating a “colicky” child.
  • Explain how to perform 5 techniques that educators and parents can use to activate the “calming reflex” to calm crying and improve a baby’s sleeping.
  • Outline disordered sleep with particular focus on sleep-disordered breathing in children.
  • Outline diagnostic categories of behavioral sleep problems in typically developing children

Accreditation: This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the Essential Areas and policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education through the joint sponsorship of the St Vincent Healthcare and the Montana Chapter, American Academy of Pediatrics.  St Vincent Healthcare is accredited by the ACCME to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

Credit designation: St Vincent Healthcare designates this educational activity for a maximum of fifteen (15)AMA PRA Category 1 Credits.™  Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

Physician Assistants:

AAPA accepts certificates of participation for educational activities certified for Category 1 credit from AOACCME, Prescribed credit from AAFP, and AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™ from organizations accredited by ACCME or a recognized state medical society. Physician Assistants may receive a maximum of 15  hours of Category 1 credit for completing this program.
